The Bell is currently hiring for the following three roles:

Deputy Director – a mid- to senior-level nonprofit leader who wants to deepen their experience across a range of nonprofit functions.
Executive Producer – an experienced producer who’s ready to take on a leadership role and to share their passion for audio storytelling with a new generation of creators.
Program Manager (Jackson, Miss.) – a driven and proactive leader who will support the launch of our new student journalism program in Jackson, Mississippi.

An investment from Press Forward

The Bell was awarded $100,000 from Press Forward, a national initiative strengthening communities through local news. We’re in great company: 205 small, local newsrooms across the U.S. are sharing $20 million for reporting on communities that have traditionally gone uncovered.

Headed to the SXSW EDU stage

The Bell was selected from among 1,400 applicants to present at SXSW EDU next March. Our panel, “Teen Journalists Dig into Educational Inequities in NYC,” will feature a live podcast recording of P.S. Weekly. Student journalists from The Bell will be joined on stage by Chalkbeat New York reporter Alex Zimmerman. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for us in the panel picker process!

Leading the Journalism for All initiative

The Bell directs the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition, which is on the search for schools that want to participate in Journalism for All, a new citywide initiative to expand journalism education in public high schools.

Journalism for All will provide three years of curricular, monetary, and coaching support to an initial cohort of 30 high schools starting in early 2025. Want to be one of them? The deadline to apply is TONIGHT! If you have any last-minute questions, email cj@youthjournalismnyc.org.

Featured student opportunities

The New York Association of Black Journalists is accepting applications for First Take, a journalism workshop for teens. Apply by Dec. 6.

Compete in August Wilson New Voices. This is a free program, open to all New York City high school students. Top finalists win cash prizes. Preliminary auditions take place Feb. 1. Learn more.

Attention high school juniors! Applications are now open to represent your state at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference next June. Apply by March 23.
