Are you a New York City high school student interested in journalism and multimedia storytelling? Do you have a passion for education equity?
You're in the right place! The Bell is looking for students who want to dive into the world of digital journalism to report on inequity in the New York City school system. Interns will work with co-founder Taylor McGraw and a team of journalists from The Hechinger Report to tell student-focused stories from inside the nation's largest school system.
What exactly will I do?
To help produce Season 3 of the Miseducation podcast, you will:
– learn and practice a range of journalism and podcasting skills, including interviewing, script writing, audio recording and audio editing
– pitch story ideas and work collaboratively to refine and pursue them
– conduct journalistic research
– create and share social media content to promote the podcast
– meet industry professionals and tour the offices of leading media outlets in New York City
Who is eligible?
Any current New York City high school student. You do not need any prior journalism or audio experience.
What's the time commitment?
4 hours per week in person, plus occasional field work outside of meetings.
We will meet every Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. You will also be expected to spend 2 additional hours in the office each week, which you can schedule M-F from 2:00 to 6:00 pm.
The internship will begin January 30 and end June 19.
Where will we meet?
All team meetings will be held at the Teach for America office at 25 Broadway in lower Manhattan.
What are the benefits?
If you meet the internship expectations, you will get a photo and bio on The Bell's website, official credit on each story you help produce, a letter of recommendation, and a $500 stipend. Most importantly, you will acquire journalism and multimedia storytelling skills that you can use in college and beyond.
