  • Maintain the production schedule and communicate deadlines clearly

  • Provide additional production or editorial support as needed

About The Bell

The Bell is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that equips high school students with the tools to tell powerful stories and the skills to thrive in media careers. With teams in New York City and Jackson, Mississippi, we’re expanding access to journalism education through hands-on newsroom programs and by collaborating with partners to build sustainable student media programs in public schools.

About the Role

The Project Coordinator will play a key role in the first phase of the Mississippi High School Journalism Project, a new statewide effort to expand access to journalism education. With support from Press Forward Mississippi, The Bell will identify and partner with up to 15 public high schools to build sustainable student journalism programs.

This position will lead much of the groundwork to bring those schools on board: identifying, recruiting, selecting, onboarding, and planning training sessions for participating educators and schools. Drawing on The Bell’s successful Journalism for All model in New York City, this initiative will equip Mississippi high schools with a comprehensive curriculum, educator training, and implementation support to launch new journalism courses in the 2026–27 school year.

The coordinator’s primary focus will be on managing communications, logistics, and relationship-building during this planning, onboarding, and training phase, which will conclude before the start of the 2026–27 academic year. The position may be extended if additional resources become available to support the next phase of the project.

The coordinator will report directly to The Bell’s Executive Director and collaborate closely with staff in Jackson and New York City.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage outreach effort to recruit interested high schools.

  • Lead communications with participating schools, teachers, and partners.

  • Track project deliverables, schedules, and milestones to ensure on-time completion of project activities.

  • Support additional fundraising efforts to assist participating schools with equipment and travel to statewide conferences.

  • Collect and organize data for grant reporting and impact tracking.

  • Contribute to newsletters, web updates, and social posts highlighting program stories and outcomes.

  • Manage occasional travel logistics for program activities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Mississippi residency and ability to travel occasionally across the state.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred:

  • Background in journalism, media production, and/or journalism education.

  • Experience working in newsrooms, schools, and/or youth development programs.

  • Familiarity with Mississippi’s K-12 education and media landscapes.
