Senior Producer

About the Role
The Bell, in collaboration with Chalkbeat New York, seeks a Senior Producer to direct the production of the third season of P.S. Weekly, a short-form, youth-led podcast featuring news and commentary about the New York City school system. This unique podcast collaboration between a local newsroom and high school journalists will give 10 student interns the opportunity to share youth perspectives on the stories that matter most to them. The show serves as a valuable information source for students, educators, public school parents, and policymakers in the nation’s largest school system.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, enthusiastic producer who’s ready to take on a leadership role and share their passion for audio storytelling with a new generation of creators. The Senior Producer will ultimately be responsible for a polished and professional-sounding finished product, while giving space to the students to make the podcast their own. They should hold students to a high standard while also recognizing that this is a learning opportunity. Positivity, patience, and flexibility are essential in this role.
The Senior Producer will work alongside The Bell’s team of youth development professionals, Chalkbeat NY’s reporters and editors, and a Technical Director who will provide engineering and post-production support.
Key Responsibilities
Lead weekly production meetings with The Bell and Chalkbeat to select stories and plan workflow
Manage student interns and delegate production roles, with contingency plans for absences or production hiccups
Provide hands-on editorial guidance as students outline, report, script, and narrate each episode
Approve scripts and create rough assemblies for the Technical Director
Collaborate with the Technical Director to finalize each episode for publication
Support the student host/s and team with ongoing coaching and feedback
Maintain the production schedule and communicate deadlines clearly
Provide additional production or editorial support as needed
Qualifications
Required:
At least three years of audio storytelling experience, including time leading production on a podcast or radio program
Strong organizational skills and experience managing complex production workflows
Proficiency with Hindenburg Pro and Zoom H5 field recording
Creative, flexible problem-solver with excellent writing and communication skills
Strong journalistic judgment, attention to detail, and understanding of the digital media landscape
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Preferred:
Experience teaching or working with teenagers
Experience producing multi-organization collaborations
Video production or social media skills
Familiarity with NYC public schools and the local education news ecosystem
Hours and Location
This is a 5-month, 20–25 hours/week fixed-term position based at The Bell’s office in lower Manhattan. Required in-person Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m.–6:30 p.m., with the opportunity for remote work on other days of the week.
Compensation & Benefits
$35.00 – $45.00 per hour commensurate with experience; this range represents the good faith estimate of compensation for this position at the time of posting.
As a part-time, temporary employee, this position is eligible for statutory benefits including New York State Paid Sick Leave, but is not eligible for health or retirement benefits.

Technical Director

About the Role
The Bell seeks a part-time Technical Director to lead engineering and post-production for our P.S. Weekly and Miseducation podcasts. The Technical Director will capture both audio and video during studio recording sessions; edit, score, and master podcast episode assemblies; create short video clips of student interviews; and deliver polished, high-quality content for The Bell’s RSS feeds and social media channels.
The ideal candidate is an experienced sound engineer with strong video-editing skills, able to collaborate closely with a production team, turn around mixes efficiently, and incorporate feedback to produce professional-grade episodes and videos. The Technical Director will also support and mentor high school interns during recording sessions, modeling best practices in the studio. Positivity, flexibility, and meticulous attention to detail are essential.
The Technical Director will work alongside a Senior Producer and a team of youth development professionals who have extensive experience managing student-led podcast programs.
Key Responsibilities
Lead weekly recording sessions with high school interns, capturing both audio and video; set up and break down equipment; manage media storage, backups, and file organization; and troubleshoot any technical issues
Level, score, and master rough podcast assemblies provided by the Senior Producer on a weekly basis
Edit short-form vertical video clips for social media
Model best practices for audio/video engineering and provide technical guidance to student interns during recording sessions
Maintain and inventory equipment
Coordinate workflows with the Senior Producer to ensure publish-ready deliverables meet weekly deadlines
Qualifications
Required:
At least three years of professional experience as an audio engineer, with at least one year working on video podcasts or as a video editor
Highly organized, with the ability to move several projects forward simultaneously
Mastery of industry-standard audio and video editing tools (e.g., ProTools, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci); proficiency with Hindenburg Pro and Zoom H5 field recording
Creative thinker; organized yet flexible; able to adapt and stay positive
Strong attention to detail
Deep understanding of the digital media landscape and avid podcast consumer
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in equal measure
Preferred:
Experience teaching or working with teenagers
Experience contributing to podcast collaborations involving multiple organizations
Social media savvy with marketing skills
Experience creating short-form vertical videos (Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)
Hours and Location
This is a five-month, 15-20 hours per week, fixed-term position based at The Bell’s office in lower Manhattan. Required in person Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2–6:45 p.m., with the opportunity for remote work on other days of the week.

About The Bell
The Bell is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that equips high school students with the tools to tell powerful stories and the skills to thrive in media careers. With teams in New York City and Jackson, Mississippi, we’re expanding access to journalism education through hands-on newsroom programs and by collaborating with partners to build sustainable student media programs in public schools.
About the Role
The Project Coordinator will play a key role in the first phase of the Mississippi High School Journalism Project, a new statewide effort to expand access to journalism education. With support from Press Forward Mississippi, The Bell will identify and partner with up to 15 public high schools to build sustainable student journalism programs.
This position will lead much of the groundwork to bring those schools on board: identifying, recruiting, selecting, onboarding, and planning training sessions for participating educators and schools. Drawing on The Bell’s successful Journalism for All model in New York City, this initiative will equip Mississippi high schools with a comprehensive curriculum, educator training, and implementation support to launch new journalism courses in the 2026–27 school year.
The coordinator’s primary focus will be on managing communications, logistics, and relationship-building during this planning, onboarding, and training phase, which will conclude before the start of the 2026–27 academic year. The position may be extended if additional resources become available to support the next phase of the project.
The coordinator will report directly to The Bell’s Executive Director and collaborate closely with staff in Jackson and New York City.
Key Responsibilities
Manage outreach effort to recruit interested high schools.
Lead communications with participating schools, teachers, and partners.
Track project deliverables, schedules, and milestones to ensure on-time completion of project activities.
Coordinate logistics for teacher training sessions, workshops, and resource delivery for educators and students.
Support additional fundraising efforts to assist participating schools with equipment and travel to statewide conferences.
Collect and organize data for grant reporting and impact tracking.
Contribute to newsletters, web updates, and social posts highlighting program stories and outcomes.
Manage occasional travel logistics for program activities.
Qualifications
Required:
Mississippi residency and ability to travel occasionally across the state.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred:
Background in journalism, media production, and/or journalism education.
Experience working in newsrooms, schools, and/or youth development programs.
Familiarity with Mississippi’s K-12 education and media landscapes.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a part-time, grant-funded position with a compensation range of $25–$32 per hour, commensurate with experience. Travel and meal expenses related to program activities are fully reimbursed. This position does not include additional employee benefits.
